WVDEP Patriot Spill MCHM Sample Results
The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection released a statement saying that MCHM was at non-detect levels, or lower than 5 parts per billion(ppb), at five locations: three on Field’s Creek and two on the Kanawha River. These tests were conducted after 108,000 gallons of coal slurry spilled in Field’s Creek from Patriot’s Kanawha Eagle Prep Plant on Tuesday, February 11.

EnviroFloc CF-1 Material Safety Data Sheet
On Wednesday, February 12th, the day after Patriot’s coal slurry spill into Field’s Creek, the Appalachian Water Watch team came across a series of large plastic containers holding a liquid chemical. These containers all held a liquid chemical called EnviroFloc CF-1. This flocculent was being slowly released into the creek at several different points. We found the Material Safety Data Sheet online and are posting it here.

MCHM at George Washington High School
On February 7, the Charleston Gazette reported that MCHM was found at Charleston’s George Washington High School. The lab results received around 8 am show that MCHM was detected in water at levels of 18.33 parts per billion (ppb), which is higher than the deemed safe 10 ppb.
